Octobo improves on conventional learning paradigms (hello, dreaded spelling test!) and their rigid “pass/fail” metrics by working in tandem with our interactive Storykits to capture your child’s imagination. The combination of storybook, story tokens, and friendly feedback from the plush itself creates a holistic experience to amplify your child’s engagement in a learning activity. By identifying the correct token on the storybook page and placing it in Octobo’s bowl, your child earns an immediate, empathetic reaction from her plushy playmate. Volitional manipulation of small objects builds focus, understanding, and fine motor control.

Seamless integration of touch sensors into the body of the plush allow it to distinguish between a poke and a hug, and make Octobo’s reactions feel immediate, specific and alive. An RFID reader pad in Octobo’s bowl scans the story tokens that come with the storybooks. The plush and tablet connect via Bluetooth, and operate without wires or wifi, making Octobo perfect for car or airplane travel. The tablet’s screen detects touch and responds immediately. (In fact, we added an empathetic “eye-poke” reaction after play-testing revealed that kids just couldn’t resist poking Octobo in the eye!)
“Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I understand.” - from Xun Kuang, 3rd century BC Modern research echoes ancient wisdom in confirming that an emotionally rich, playful, and self-directed learning experience leads to better results than the classical pedagogy many of us grew up with (and often disliked). By immersing children in a storytelling world of sights, sounds, physical objects, and interaction, Octobo engages a child’s mind, body, and heart in a full sensorimotor experience.
Along with encouraging cooperation and physical exercise with stories and mini-games, Octobo’s “operating system” mimics healthy social relationships. For example: the Parent Portal offers key features like time limits. But rather than a simple countdown, Octobo tells your child “I’m feeling tired and need to rest now. Let’s play again later!” By modeling forthright speech about feelings and needs, Octobo helps your child learn to identify and express their feelings and needs as they navigate their own social environments.
